AUTUMN Interiors Trends 2021
Autumn has officially arrived, and after a year of reduced collections thanks to Covid, Brexit and numerous shipping container issues, the latest offerings are muted but worth the wait.
Nature-inspired interiors, deep forest greens and room dividers are on our home wish lists for autumn 2021, according to data from Pinterest. Unsurprisingly, the results are a picture of warmth and cosiness.
Cosy, autumnal interiors are at the top of everybody's mood boards, as we ease ourselves into colder months by bringing the outdoors in. Nature-inspired interiors will always be a top trend, but now more than ever as people want to replicate the natural within their homes, having spent over a year inside due to lockdown. As a result, the trends we’re seeing for fall 2021 reflect the more permanent changes we’ve made to our living spaces as a reaction to the pandemic. The central theme? Snug fabrics, comfort and warmth, daringly-dark earthy tones and vintage-inspired pieces, with a bounty of practical storage solutions to boot.
Pull on some cashmere socks, grab your pumpkin-spice latte and read on to prepare yourself and your home for the colder seasons with our complete guide to fall home décor trends.
Autumn Colours
As the days get shorter and the weather outside starts to cool down, we want to bring warmth into the home using simple, fast and effective methods. To achieve this easily with colour, introduce accents of burnt orange, mustard yellow and forest greens to evoke feelings of nature by swapping out bed throws and cushions in the living room and bedroom areas, as well as updating your indoor house plants to reflect the changing seasons.
- Earthy Tones: Neutral is never truly out of style. Adding earthy tones to your home, such as pale mushroom, greens, browns, oranges and ivory will inject a healthy dose of cosy into any room. Enliven this trend with printed, embroidered and tufted cotton cushions and throws, as well as bamboo and rattan furniture and lighting.
- Blush: Blush is back, and it’s better than ever. This rosy hue is the perfect accent colour for softening any neutral home.
- Terracotta: Try terracotta tones that suggest cinnamon, caramel and pumpkin for a traditional fall feeling. The warm shades of red, orange, and brown will create an inviting atmosphere perfect for the autumn weather.
- Rich, Dark, Saturated Colours: A dark feature wall creates the perfect moody backdrop to offset your autumnal decorative pieces and really make them pop. Filling a large, minimal vase with some branches of fall leaves is the easiest way to add a warm, natural touch at home, or you can also explore more creative solutions like garlands and centrepieces.
Bouclé
Whilst this trend was certainly felt at the beginning of the year, it now heads the forefront of the decorative scene. Without a doubt, this material is currently essential in cosy and warm interiors, with a ‘cocooning‘ soul that was prevalent amongst several of the collections launched at last month's Autumn Fair Interiors trade show. Soft to the touch, its popularity now goes beyond blankets and cushions. This fabric can be found on sofas, dining chairs and even bar stools. Although we like it in all colours, pure white has won us over us for its elegance.
It appears that anything ‘boucle’, or ‘teddy bear’ is popular this autumn. Interior trends often come from the couture fashion houses and there’s probably none greater than Chanel’s iconic boucle inspired collections for 2021.
A Statement Yellow Chair
No longer relegated to a small 'pop' of colour with a cushion or vase, the super accessory of the season is a big, bold, golden-yellow feature chair that will brighten up your lounge area with confidence and a healthy dose of eccentricity.
Soft Industrial
Industrial chic is back, but this time it is extra cosy. Whilst typical materials include metal, concrete and exposed brickwork, the trend is now diffused with soft cushions and throws in neutral colours. We can always count on the Dutch designs to be one step ahead of the curve. Take a look at the collections by Light & Living and Zuiver for black painted metal storage pieces and iron side tables, as well as their fabulous selection of seating and lighting options for the home.
When you’re looking at pulling a softer industrial-style room together with a few simple finishing touches, seek out pieces with curves – including artwork with fluid paint lines, designed to diffuse the straight, linear lines of the furniture in the room. Styling a variety of scatter cushions, meanwhile, is a great way to romanticize a leather sofa, as well as a curated mix of art prints all within the same colour palette. Other finishing touches to consider include metallic such as brass, which can look incredible when teamed against black metal, and mirrored surfaces for a more luxe approach to this trend.
Room Dividers
We’ve all been struggling to separate work and leisure time in the last 18 months. With periods of lockdown and many of us working from home for most of the year, our homes need to be more flexible and adaptable than ever before.
Positioning a room divider in between pieces of furniture can help try and create separate spaces for working in the day and relaxing in the evening, giving them different atmospheres and a feeling of more elements to the space.
Smart Storage
We have been seeing a more creative approach to increasing storage at home from now on. Particularly aimed at families with young children, although a dedicated playroom might sound ideal, in reality toys regularly migrate from room to room.
The perfect solution to keep clutter at bay is low level storage units in multiple rooms – ottoman style furniture, sideboards and cabinets – meaning games and toys can be quickly tidied away at the end of the day without creating extra work for tired parents. This Elvesden Storage Bench by Gallery Direct doubles up as extra seating.
A SNEAK PEEK AT 2022...
…transparent interior design is a trend that is starting to sneak in this Autumn and it is here to stay. Transparent lighting and furnishings reflect light and create an open and inviting atmosphere in the home.
