Corner Shelves: Measuring and Planning Useful Wall Storage
A useful corner-shelving layout starts with two measurements: the wall space available on each side and the depth you can comfortably allow into the room. Then decide what the shelves must hold. Displaying a few small objects calls for a different arrangement from storing books, kitchen items or bathroom essentials.
Choose the shelf profile before the finish
The examples here are straight wall shelves that can be positioned on a wall beside a corner. For a purpose-made 90-degree corner unit, check the product’s profile and its dimensions against both walls. A straight shelf should be planned as its own rectangular footprint; do not assume two shelves will meet neatly at the corner.
| Shelf | Listed width × depth × height | Construction |
|---|---|---|
| Bottrells Large Wall Shelf | 90 × 15 × 7cm | Black iron shelf; hanging orientation specified as one way only. |
| Crofton Wall Shelf | 60 × 15 × 7cm | Black iron shelf; one-way hanging orientation and sawtooth fixing type listed. |
| Farringdon Double Wall Shelf | 70 × 20.5 × 40cm | Double wall shelf made with steel rods and banding; matt lacquer finish and a small retaining lip. |

Measure the objects you want to store
Check a book, basket or plant pot against the usable shelf surface. The overall dimensions include the structure, so a 15cm product depth does not establish the exact clear storage depth. Farringdon projects 5.5cm further than the two iron shelves in the comparison; mark that difference on the wall if the corner is beside a doorway or work area.
The 90cm and 60cm black iron examples give you two different lengths to plan around. Keep enough vertical space for your tallest object and for lifting it out, particularly where another shelf or a cupboard sits above.
Confirm the wall and the load before fitting
Ask for the manufacturer’s load guidance and fixing requirements for the selected shelf. The right fixing depends on the wall construction and the intended load; the product’s material or fixing style alone does not establish what it can safely carry. Have the proposed position checked for concealed services before drilling.
Keep the arrangement usable
Place everyday items where they can be reached easily and leave room around sockets, switches and any opening cupboard door. A small display can use the corner well without filling every centimetre. If you need deeper storage or enclosed shelves, a freestanding unit may suit the job better than a narrow wall shelf.
Explore shelves and hooks or contact our team with the dimensions of both walls, a photograph and the items you want to store so we can check the product details you need.
