Floor Lamps: Reading Positions, Reach and the Space Around a Seat
Place a floor lamp around the person and task, then check its footprint. The base needs a stable position, the shade needs enough space, and the switch should be reachable in normal use. A lamp’s overall height alone does not tell you where its light will fall.

| Lamp | Listed overall dimensions | Useful feature |
|---|---|---|
| Binfield Floor Lamp | W35 × D69.5 × H163.5 cm | Matt black finish, grey cotton-mix shade and lampholder switch. |
| Aberdare Floor Lamp | W42 × D42 × H158.5 cm | Oak-effect resin with a natural linen shade and inline switch. |
| Feliciani Brushed Brass Floor Lamp | W34.5 × D135 × H175 cm | White marble base and a moveable head. |
Allow for the full reach
Feliciani’s listed depth is much greater than the other examples, so confirm the intended position of the head and base. Do not treat the width of a base as the full space an extended lamp needs. Use the overall measurements to test the arrangement beside your chair.
Check the view and the controls
Sit where you intend to read and check the likely shade position. Consider whether the bulb will be visible and whether the lamp will obstruct a route past the furniture. Binfield uses a switch at the lampholder; Aberdare uses an inline switch on the cable. These are different everyday arrangements.
Choose the finish accurately
Aberdare’s wood appearance is described as oak-effect resin, rather than solid oak. Feliciani combines a brass finish with a marble base. Read the material description alongside the colour name so you know what you are selecting.
Check bulb compatibility, included parts and the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model. Plan the cable route without creating a trip point. Browse floor lamps or contact us about any missing specification.
