How to Stop Rugs Moving on Carpet

Rugs placed on top of carpet often creep, wrinkle, or shift over time due to friction between the fibres—or lack thereof. This not only looks untidy but can also create a tripping hazard. Thankfully, there are several simple and effective ways to keep your rug securely in place.
1. Use a Rug-to-Carpet Underlay
Specially designed non-slip underlays grip both the carpet and the underside of your rug. Unlike standard rug pads for hard floors, these have a softer texture that prevents damage to carpet pile while holding the rug firmly.
2. Apply Double-Sided Carpet Tape
Heavy-duty double-sided carpet tape can be used along the edges or across the middle of your rug to prevent movement. Look for versions made for carpet-to-carpet adhesion so they remove cleanly without leaving sticky residue.
3. Opt for Heavy Furniture Placement
Position part of your rug under furniture like a coffee table, armchair, or sofa. The added weight naturally reduces slipping and gives the space a more anchored, intentional look.
4. Try Rug Pins or Grippers
Rug gripper discs or pins push through the rug into the carpet below, fastening the two layers together without visible damage. They’re particularly useful for smaller rugs or runners in high-traffic areas.
5. Choose the Right Rug Backing
Some rugs—like high-quality designs from Tommy Franks, Eichholtz, or Uttermost—come with textured or felted backings that naturally grip better on carpet.
Tip: Always smooth the carpet beneath your rug before securing it to avoid trapping wrinkles or lumps, which can shorten the life of both your rug and your carpet.
