Collection: Bar Stools + Counter Stools

Choose bar and counter stools around the counter you already have. Seat height, the space beneath the worktop and the stool's full frame dimensions matter more than whether its name says "bar" or "counter".

Start with the underside of the counter

Measure from the floor to the underside, including any apron, rail or support that reduces the opening. Compare this with the listed seat height, not the height of the back. Leave room for the person using the stool to sit and move comfortably; one fixed gap will not suit every counter or sitter.

For an adjustable design, check the actual seat-height range. If you want to tuck a stool away, measure the back and arm heights against the opening too. Our bar and counter stool sizing guide works through different seat heights and frame sizes.

Plan the whole row of seats

Measure the usable counter length between end panels and supports. Use each stool's overall width, rather than just its seat cushion, and allow space between neighbours for arms and movement. Check the depth behind the seats with people sitting down, and allow turning room where a model swivels.

Choose support, upholstery and quantities

Compare backs, footrests and seat shapes for the way the kitchen is used. Check the specific upholstery and cleaning instructions instead of assuming that a material is stain resistant. Finally, confirm whether the listing is for one stool or a pack, and check any assembly requirements before calculating how many to order.
