Planning a Table Setting: Sizes, Quantities and Care

Plan a table setting around the people, plates and serving dishes it needs to accommodate. Start with one complete place setting, then repeat it around your actual table. This makes it easier to choose useful sizes and order the right number of pieces.

The examples below are current items from our tableware range. They offer different shapes, textures and care requirements; they are suggestions to compare, not a matched set supplied together.

Choose the shape before adding the finishing touches

The rectangular mat is 7 cm wider and 3 cm shallower than the round mat’s overall outline. Cut paper templates to compare them, then add your actual dinner plate, cutlery and glasses. A mat’s width is not the total space a diner needs: elbows, glasses and utensils can extend beyond it.

On a round or oval table, test neighbouring settings together because their edges may meet at an angle. On any shape, leave room for shared dishes and check that serving them does not require moving everyone’s glass.

Count the pieces you need, not just the packs

For an item supplied in a four-pack, the following examples assume one piece per diner. Apply the calculation separately to each product you choose.

For six places with one placemat, one napkin and one wine glass each, two four-packs of each chosen item provide six settings and two spare pieces of each type. If you want two glasses per person, count those separately.

Cutlery needs a different check. The Avie Gold Finish Cutlery Set is listed as 16 pieces, but a total piece count alone does not tell you how many of each utensil it contains. Confirm the knife, fork and spoon quantities against your menu before ordering.

Build a combination around what you already own

For a light setting, compare the white Diamond Weave mat with the grey striped napkin and your existing plates. The smoked-grey glasses can repeat that grey tone. For a more textured arrangement, try the round Tonal Weave mat beneath the same plate and see whether its outline leaves enough room for the cutlery.

Use current photographs as a starting point. Check colours together in the room where possible, and keep decorative pieces low enough for guests to see one another across the table.

Keep the care instructions separate

Diamond Weave’s listing specifies a maximum 30°C wash and line drying. Tonal Weave is marked spot clean only and do not wash. Both contain cotton, but their care requirements differ, so a material name is not a washing instruction.

The Swirl glasses are marked unsuitable for microwave use; the listing checked for this guide does not establish dishwasher suitability. Avie’s instructions specify warm soapy water and avoiding abrasive cleaners. Follow the current label for each item and ask about any missing instruction before cleaning.
