Find the right type of light

Start with chandeliers and ceiling lights for an overhead fitting, or wall lights where you want light beside a mirror, bed or seating area. Table lamps suit a bedside, desk or sideboard; floor lamps offer another option beside a chair without using a tabletop.

Check the size and what is included

For a pendant, compare its diameter and adjustable drop with your ceiling height and the furniture below. For a lamp, allow for the whole base, shade and cable route. Our pendant-light measuring guide and floor-lamp placement guide work through current examples.

Some lamps are sold as a base only. For example, the Fleur Blue Floral Ceramic Table Lamp is listed without a shade, with a 30 cm diameter shade recommended. Check the selected product for bulb requirements, shade inclusion and dimmer compatibility before ordering.

Plan the finish and the light output

Compare the fitting's finish with nearby furniture and fittings, then choose the light output for its job. Brightness and colour temperature describe different things: colour temperature indicates the light's warm or cool appearance. Follow the product's bulb ratings and have your installer confirm suitability for the intended position.
