Bookcases: Shelf Openings, Overall Height and Fixing
A bookcase needs to fit both the room and the books you want to keep in it. Start with the tallest volume and the depth of the larger books, then compare the usable shelf openings. The outside height and width help you plan the furniture’s position, while the internal measurements determine what fits.

Compare the storage construction
| Bookcase | Verified layout | Practical question |
|---|---|---|
| Jonathan Charles Low Double Bookcase Rural | Four adjustable shelves and two drawers; W188 × D38 × H96.5 cm. | Does a broad, low arrangement suit the available wall and book collection? |
| TA Studio Drewry in Anise | Beech frame, four glass-inset shelves and a wooden bottom shelf. | What are the clear openings and load limits for each shelf type? |
The low double bookcase provides a labelled external size. Drewry’s listing gives an unlabelled dimension string, so obtain its current dimension drawing before planning the height or footprint. Its glass shelves create a different display surface, but the material alone does not establish how much weight each shelf can support.
Measure the opening, depth and adjustment range
Record book height and depth with any covers or slipcases included. Compare them with the clear height between shelves and the usable depth ahead of the back panel. Check the opening at the front if supports or decorative details narrow it.
Adjustable shelves can help you organise different formats, but adjustment has a range and fixed positions. Ask how far the shelves move and whether one section is fixed. For the low double bookcase, plan each bay separately rather than treating its full 188 cm width as one uninterrupted shelf.
Ask for the shelf-load guidance
A row of books, a ceramic collection and a small lamp impose different loads. Obtain the manufacturer’s limit for the exact shelf and follow any distribution instructions. Do not treat an attractive display photograph or the overall furniture weight as a load rating.
Use drawer interiors for a separate check if you want to store albums, papers or accessories. The two drawers in the low double model add enclosed storage, but their usable dimensions are not established by the bookcase’s outside size.
Check placement and fixing before installation
Allow for skirting, sockets, door movement and the route used to bring the furniture into the room. Confirm assembly and anti-topple instructions and the required wall fixings. Only use a bookcase away from a wall or as a room divider when the manufacturer confirms that arrangement is suitable.
For a different storage problem, see our wall-shelf planning guide or corner-display guide. They cover positions that need different measurements from a freestanding bookcase along a wall.
For storage behind glass doors, see our glass display cabinet guide, which compares enclosed layouts and explains how to check door access.
